American by birth, he grows up in Italy and is conscripted into the Italian army at the onset of the conflicts that led to World War II. He struggles to survive through twelve years of military service in North Africa, Russia, and Italy. After the war, he returns to his father's devastated lands in southern Italy where he can only dream of returning to America.
Giovanni traveled two long roads. The first one, a two year wartime journey from Ukraine to his home in southern Italy, was a journey of necessity. The other, a forty five year journey of return as an immigrant to America, the country of his birth, was one of choice.

Excellent. I am not a fan of war books but this had a personal connection as the person who recommended it is the son in law of the author. I think Sal missed his own boat as he is a great writter and for that alone I would read anything he wrote. Perhaps. a story on the tree house could be next, just let me know and I will stand in line for it. Thank you for a heartwarming family story. :-)Product details

This book is like a history class covering many topics. Giovanni lived a very interesting life. I am sure his son proudly told his story.
Purchased as a special gift. Became a book for the whole family. Quite the revelation. Reading all that Giovanni traversed through caused wonder as to how many others percerved though the same or similar. Thought revoking.
Very well written... Such a fascinating engrossing story.
The description of the book drew me in.
I enjoy reading about people, both military personnel and private citizen, who endured WWII.
This book didn't stop with how people coped with the war. The determination of the author's father to return to his birthplace, was inspiring.
I'm pleased to have read this book.
From start to finish the story line is interesting and moving.

Mestmorizing and the real feel of one person's participation in World War II that does not follow what most people would think of the usual war story. The character's ability to let you in to his world that was surrounded and engulfed by war is much different than how most stories are written of units and actions. This shows a real human side of war and the people that lived it. It let's you see and feel parts of the war no one ever writes about. An excellent book based on ture experiences not fictional. These are real people solving life's problems and working towards a better life. No one knows what life holds for them, but we all try to make plans and yet these people were in situations where others made decisions and plans that effected their lives without their input. I would have loved more details and character development, but it still held my attention and made me feel like I knew the people involved. It shows that each of us have a tale that others would find intersting.
